The video game will not have secrets for you anymore ! EXTRACT After years marked by total abstruseness, the early 2000s saw the transition of PC games to the world of consoles. In market terms, game consoles had reached a general-public status, ensuring high popularity—but the PC market put up strong resistance, in particular by selling downloadable games through stores such as Steam. Numerous PC-based developers, such as Warren Spector (Deus Ex, Epie Mickey), Peter Molyneux (Populous, Fable), and of course Ken Levine, began developing for consoles. In the same vein, numerous genres that were typically destined for PC gaming began migrating to consoles. This change certainly had numerous causes, one being Microsoft’s arrival on the console market with Xbox (with architecture close to a PC). In addition, typical inconveniences in PC development were eliminated (games no longer had to be designed for a wide variety of configurations, as a console by nature has a stable internal architecture). Finally, there was the question of pirating—even though it exists on consoles, it is much more common on PCs. As a result, major developers such as Valve Corporation (Portal 2), BioWare (Mass Effect) and Bethesda Softworks (Fallout 4 and Skyrim entered the market, and the general mentality changed. How To Play Video Games

by Nina Huntemann, How To Play Video Games Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download How To Play Video Games books, Forty original contributions on games and gaming culture What does Pokémon Go tell us about globalization? What does Tetris teach us about rules? Is feminism boosted or bashed by Kim Kardashian: Hollywood? How does BioShock Infinite help us navigate world-building? From arcades to Atari, and phone apps to virtual reality headsets, video games have been at the epicenter of our ever-evolving technological reality. Unlike other media technologies, video games demand engagement like no other, which begs the question—what is the role that video games play in our lives, from our homes, to our phones, and on global culture writ large? How to Play Video Games brings together forty original essays from today’s leading scholars on video game culture, writing about the games they know best and what they mean in broader social and cultural contexts. Read about avatars in Grand Theft Auto V, or music in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. See how Age of Empires taught a generation about postcolonialism, and how Borderlands exposes the seedy underbelly of capitalism. These essays suggest that understanding video games in a critical context provides a new way to engage in contemporary culture. They are a must read for fans and students of the medium.

Bioshock Rapture

by John Shirley, Bioshock Rapture Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Bioshock Rapture books, It's the end of World War II. FDR's New Deal has redefined American politics. Taxes are at an all-time high. The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki has brought a fear of total annihilation. The rise of secret government agencies and sanctions on business has many watching their backs. America's sense of freedom is diminishing . . . and many are desperate to take that freedom back. Among them is a great dreamer, an immigrant who pulled himself from the depths of poverty to become one of the wealthiest and admired men in the world. That man is Andrew Ryan, and he believed that great men and women deserve better. And so he set out to create the impossible, a utopia free from government, censorship, and moral restrictions on science--where what you give is what you get. He created Rapture---the shining city below the sea. But as we all know, this utopia suffered a great tragedy. This is the story of how it all came to be . . .and how it all ended. Excerpt: The 1904 Emporia bombing is an event mentioned in BioShock Infinite. In 1904, the Emporia Towers area of Columbia was bombed by an unknown assailant. The attack was most likely on a Vox Populi meeting or rally, as the group attempts to execute an innocent postman on the charge of planning the bombing in 1912. However, whether this attack was commited by the Founders, a splinter group of the Vox Populi or someone else completely is unknown. An Automated Stallion is a lifelike horse automaton in Columbia. Since 1904, Payton Lane Easter and his family engineered the Automated Stallion as an alternate mode of luxurious transportation for businesses and citizens through the streets, as well as replacing horses that are more likely to fall off the floating city when startled by weather conditions and enemy attacks. An Automated Stallion appears briefly in the beginning of the BioShock Infinite Gameplay Demo, as is seen drawing a newspaper carriage along the street. Instead of hind legs, A large wh...
