E J Josey

by Renate L. Chancellor, E J Josey Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download E J Josey books, This work provides a comprehensive examination of the life and professional career of E.J Josey within the broader historical and political landscape of the civil rights movement. In the era of Jim Crow, Josey rose to prominence in the library profession by challenging the American Library Association (ALA) to live up to its creed of equality for all. This was not easy during the 1950s and 1960s, during segregation. Using interviews with Josey and his contemporaries, as well as several archival sources, library educator Renate Chancellor analyzes Josey’s leadership, particularly within modern day racial currents. During his professional career, spanning over fifty years (1952-2002), Josey worked as a librarian (1953-1966), an administrator of library services (1966-1986), and as a professor of library science (1986-1995). He also served as President of the American Library Association and perhaps his most notable achievement, he successfully drafted a resolution that prevented state library associations from discriminating against African American librarians. This essentially ended segregation in the ALA. Josey’s transformative leadership provides a model to tackle today’s civil rights challenges both in and outside the library profession. This authoritative work copublished by the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE) documents for the historical record a significant period of history that is underexplored in the scholarly literature. The target audience for this book are researchers, historians, LIS educators and students interested in understanding the complex struggle for civil and human rights in professional organizations.

Black Wealth White Wealth

by Melvin L. Oliver, Black Wealth White Wealth Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Black Wealth White Wealth books, The award-winning Black Wealth / White Wealth offers a powerful portrait of racial inequality based on an analysis of private wealth. Melvin Oliver and Thomas Shapiro's groundbreaking research analyzes wealth - total assets and debts rather than income alone - to uncover deep and persistent racial inequality in America, and they show how public policies have failed to redress the problem. First published in 1995, Black Wealth / White Wealth is considered a classic exploration of race and inequality. It provided, for the first time, systematic empirical evidence that explained the racial inequality gap between blacks and whites. The Tenth Anniversary edition contains two entirely new and substantive chapters. These chapters look at the continuing issues of wealth and inequality in America and the new policies that have been launched in the past ten years. Some have been progressive while others only recreate inequality - for example the proposal to eliminate the estate tax. Compelling and also informative, Black Wealth / White Wealth is not just pioneering research. It is also a powerful counterpoint to arguments against affirmative action and a direct challenge to current social welfare policies that are tilted towards the wealthy.

Why African Americans Can T Get Ahead

by Gwen Richardson, Why African Americans Can T Get Ahead Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Why African Americans Can T Get Ahead books, Have you ever wondered why, despite decades of economic development, civil rights legislation and welfare programs, the economic status of African Americans always seem to lag behind nearly every other group? Why do members of other ethnic groups come to America from foreign countries and, within a few years, own most of the businesses in Black communities and, at the same time, treat us with utter contempt?Even when a few African Americans experience economic success, such as entertainers and athletes, why is it that so many of them end up penniless after generating millions of dollars in wealth for others? For years, the author pondered these same questions. Her research and quest for answers has led to eye-opening revelations about the fabric of American society and the fate of the African-American community.

Solutions For Black America

by Jawanza Kunjufu, Solutions For Black America Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Solutions For Black America books, Contending that the media and the black community allocate too much of their efforts to talking about the problems afflicting the African American community, this book attempts to reverse that trend by offering solutions in many areas, including education, family, health, economics, politics, organising, and Afrocentricity. Concerned that one-third of black America and one-half of its children live below the poverty line, activist and educator Jawanza Kunjufu expresses his concern about whether affirmative action and integration have really helped this population. Many diverse schools of thought are expressed, from the differences between Ward Connerly and Jesse Jackson and between US Supreme Justice Clarence Thomas and Al Sharpton. Also addressed is what percentage of the problem and their solutions lie with the effects of slavery and what portion should be addressed by self-responsibility.
